What do you think can be done to reduce algal blooms?

Algal Blooms

Algae are non-flowering plants which grow in fresh or sea water or damp places. They range from microscopic single-celled plants to seaweeds.

Nitrogen and phosphorus compounds from sewage (even if treated), fertilizers and other farm and industrial wastes find their way into rivers and from rivers into the sea. These compounds enrich the water (a process called eutrophication). Plants in the water grow excessively using the extra nutrients, producing a thick algal bloom. This bloom prevents light penetrating much below the surface. The lack of light causes the algae deeper in the water to die, as they cannot photosynthesize (use carbon dioxide, water and the energy from sunlight to produce carbohydrates and oxygen). Bacteria decompose the dead algae, using up the oxygen in the water. The lack of oxygen can cause fish to suffocate and die. Algal blooms are also considered a possible cause of dolphins stranding.

Microscopic algae which drift in ocean currents are called phytoplankton, and form part of the plankton community. When present in quantity, their chlorophyll turns the water green, so they can be detected by ships, aircraft and from space.

Here are some photos of phytoplankton from the Earth Observatory site:

Md. Researchers Predict Bad Year for Algae

Chesapeake Bay is predicted to suffer badly from algae blooms this year as the water quality is poor. Algal blooms feed off run-off from fields and sewage, and suffocates marine life. (Forecast).
